New data center slated for Cermak Rd.

The new structure planned for 111 E. Cermak Rd. is the first building in the area constructed specifically as a data center.

Chicago-based JRM Technology LLC plans to build a 315,000 square foot data center at 111 E. Cermak Rd., just two blocks from the 1.1 million square foot data carrier site at 350 E. Cermak Rd. in the former RR Donnelly printing plant.

JRM selected McHugh Construction Co. as design-build contractor, ESD Inc. as lead architect and engineer, Archideas as consulting architect, and CS Associates Inc. as structural engineer.

James R. McHugh, JRM principal, said, “With the 350 E. Cermak location approximately 95% leased, firms in need of very fast fiber optic transmission speeds are seeking closer data center space.” JRM is negotiating actively with potential tenants for the new site, he added.

The development team aims to begin construction on the six-story building this fall, with a projected completion date of late 2011. Plans call for 143,000 square feet of raised floor area and a reinforced concrete structure with 18-foot ceilings, heavy floor-loading capacity, space for full generator backups, and heavy-duty yet highefficiency cooling systems.

“This will be the first data center in the downtown area designed and built specifically as a data center from the ground up,” McHugh said “Every aspect of the building will be tailored to clients’ needs, from robust redundant power sourcing to cooling systems and security. The new center’s location helps ensure a large amount of fiber providers with high-volume and low-latency fiber optic lines.”

The center will be powered by nearly 40 megawatts of electricity; ComEd plans to install two substations to service the facility. JRM will seek gold-level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification based on sustainable features such as a green roof and fresh-air cooling.
