Three Mariano’s grocery stores slated for areaNovember 3, 2011
Mariano’s Fresh Market, a full-service grocery and part of the Milwaukee-based Roundy’s Inc. family of grocery stores, will open locations in the South and West Loop sometime in 2013. Also, the company has announced it will open a store at 39th and State Sts., plus two more at other Chicago locations.
The South Loop store will be situated on Clark Street between 16th and 17th Streets. The West Loop store, which the company refers to as the Gateway store, will open in Greektown at Halsted and Monroe Streets.
Vivian King, director of public affairs and spokesperson for Roundy’s Inc., said the company has not set a timetable for constructing the West Loop location; scheduling will depend on time needed for various approvals, but “the process will begin sometime in 2012,” King stated. Planning and approval processes are underway. The West Loop Mariano’s is part of a development for which the City has agreed to provide about $7 million in tax increment financing money.
Third Ward Alderman Pat Dowell recently visited a Mariano’s Fresh Market in Arlington Heights, IL in a fact-finding mission. The Mariano’s stores “are different from Jewel, Dominick’s, and Whole Foods in terms of the shopping experience they provide,” said Dowell. “They have wider aisles, good price points, and offer an array of food products that can be tailored to their specific target market.”
Concerning the 39th and State store, Dowell is “working diligently with the developers” and is pleased “the community will have a grocery store option in the near future.”
Former Dominick’s CEO and Chicago native Robert A. Mariano is president and CEO of Roundy’s Inc., which operates 155 stores under the banners of Pick’n Save, Copps, Metro Market, Rainbow, and Mariano’s Fresh Market throughout Wisconsin, across the Twin Cities in Minnesota, and in the greater Chicago area.
