John N. Delgado, longtime military employee and musician, passes awayOctober 3, 2013
John N. Delgado, a lifelong resident of the Near West Side, passed away Sept. 13 at age 94. Mr. Delgado was the son of the late Clara and Miguel Delgado, who immigrated to the United States from Zacatecas, Mexico, in the early 1900s. Mr. Delgado was born in El Paso, TX, and the family later lived in Kansas, where Mr. Delgado learned to hunt and became a crack shot.
The family came to Chicago in 1939, first settling in Pilsen and attending St. Francis of Assisi Church. They eventually purchased a house near Flournoy and Loomis Streets.
Mr. Delgado served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, working as a quartermaster handling supplies. He was stationed in the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and Borneo. Upon returning to Chicago, Mr. Delgado again worked for the Army as a quartermaster at its Pershing Road and Loop locations. He later served as adjutant and office service manager at Fort Sheridan, where he worked for 25 years and was part of the administrative team that oversaw the fort’s closing. Mr. Delgado served the Federal government for 50 years.
Active in the community, he was a founding member of the American Legion Manuel Perez Post. He served on the Notre Dame de Chicago Church community board as well as the Guadalupana Society, a group dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe.
“The society established one of the early Catholic Mass services in Spanish in Chicago, held in Notre Dame’s lower-level grotto chapel,” said his nephew, Michael J. Hernandez.
Mr. Delgado was “an accomplished musician bringing the mambo sound to all parts of Illinois with his group Johnny Delgado and his Band,” Hernandez added. Mr. Delgado played the bass and performed at weddings and parades. Later, he joined Don Roberto’s Band. His wife, Rita, and son, John R. Jean) Delgado preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Al) Gonzalez, and son, Richard J. Delgado. Mr. Delgado was grandfather of Sandra Johnson, John R. (Veronica) Delgado Jr., and Gina (Wayne) Garrity. He was great-grandfather of Stephen, Ivan, Lauren, Ethan, Vincent, and Nicholas; brother of Connie (John) Perez, Liz (the late Leo) Hernandez, the late Dora (the late John) Soto, Esther (the late Joe) Lopez, the Rev. Leo Delgado, and Michael (the late Frances) Delgado. He also had many nieces and nephews. He was the former father-in-law of Richard Martinez. Mr. Delgado was the companion of Donna Vanek.
Interment is at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. A funeral Mass was said at Our Lady of the Snows Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ASPCA would be welcome.
