UIC invites public to Open House
September 4, 2015

This year’s University of Illinois at Chicago Open House on Saturday, Oct. 3, promises to be one of UIC’s largest public events of the year, with more than 100 free activities, including lectures, demonstrations, and tours in every part of the East Campus.

“This fall, we really challenged the university community to think about how to offer programs that might not only be of interest to prospective students but to our neighbors in the area, alumni, and other friends of the university,” said Sharon Kennedy, one of the event’s coordinators. “The campus responded with some very creative programming.”

Highlights include:
* What Color Was That Dress?: Paul Malchow, biological sciences professor and director of the UIC Laboratory of Integrative Neuroscience, will explore the neurobiological basis of visual perceptions. Lecture Center A, 11 a.m.

* Body Alignment for Musicians and Actors: Join School of Theatre and Music professor Rachelle Tsachor for a workshop on proper body alignment and how to move in a more healthful, relaxed, and comfortable way. Education, Theatre, Music and Social Work Building, at both noon and 1 p.m.

* Treats of the World: A sampling with the UIC language and film clubs. Douglas Hall, Room 308, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

“Open house is ideally about letting the public understand what goes on at an urban research university,” said Oscar Rodriguez, director of recruitment and outreach. “It’s our chance to showcase our faculty and students, and the projects they are working on year round, in a way that is digestible to the public.”

In fact, many of the areas featured in the event, including one of the nation’s leading 3-D visualization labs, the architecture and design studios, and the language lab normally are restricted to faculty and students.

The open house will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Most activities will be held east of Morgan Street and south of Harrison Street. For more details about the programs, times and locations, or to pre-register, visit www.openhouse.uic.edu.
