Letter: Embrace diversity
May 6, 2017

Dear Editor:

I just finished reading the Gazette, including the editorial from April 7. I was away from campus when I heard about the anti-Semitic materials that appeared on campus. I was heartened to read about the strong and principled condemnation by our Chancellor, Dr. Michael Amiridis, our Provost, Dr. Susan Poser, and my colleagues from across the faculty who stood together and united against such hate and divisive statements.

I want to thank you for your call to embrace the diversity that makes UIC (and Chicago) such a wonderful place. It was part of the reason that I was so excited to become the first Vice Provost of International Affairs at UIC (I started on March 1). To me in my VPIA position and as a UIC graduate, UIC represents what is best about Chicago and America: we are stronger and richer because (not in spite of) the tremendous diversity that make UIC, Chicago, and America unique.

Again, thank you for your editorial.

Dr. Neal R. McCrillis
Vice Provost for International Affairs
University of Illinois at Chicago
