Wrestlers from Chicago Hope Academy win first sectional title
June 3, 2017

Chicago Hope Academy’s wrestling team fell short of the state championship but had a successful season nonetheless.

Dan Willis, former president of the Chicago Wrestling Coaches Association, leads the team, with seniors Sam Willis and John Garcia serving as captains. In 2016-17, the wrestlers finished 25-6, winning tournaments at Rich East, Amboy, and Rockford Lutheran. The wrestlers won the Illinois High School Association regional championship at Lisle High School on Feb. 3. They then won the sectional championship for the first time in school history against Walter Christian High School in Coal City, IL.

That success qualified the team to go to Bloomington, IL, to wrestle for the state title on Feb. 28. They lost to the Beardstown Tigers in the quarterfinals. By winning the IHSA sectional championship, however, the team had its best season ever. Chicago Hope is located at 2189 W. Bowler St. Call (312) 491-1600.
