September 1, 2017

St. Matthew Lutheran Church has welcomed Rev. Cesar Sifuentes as its new pastor, and Sifuentes is enjoying sharing his mission with the Pilsen community.

Rev. Sifuentes graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, IN, in 1980 and was ordained in 1982 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Melrose Park. Before coming to St. Matthew, he worked in Michigan, New York, and California and recently served at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Palatine, IL.

The previous pastor, the Rev. Julio Loza, had been pastor since 1980 and retired last September.

Rev. Sifuentes’ wife, Elly, a deaconess, also has joined St. Matthew. She teaches Sunday school and vacation bible study. “My job in the church is very wonderful,” she said.

“Our Lord called us to St. Matthew,” Rev. Sifuentes said.

The church has close to 100 members and is located at 2108 W. 21st St., and features the El Comedor Popular Soup Kitchen. Call (773) 847-6458.
