Fundraiser set for Central Asia Institute

Jena Doolas, a South Loop resident and volunteer for the Central Asia Institute (CAI), reports that the organization will host the “Promoting Literacy, Promoting Peace Gala” as the CAI’s annual fundraiser, Saturday, April 3, at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare at 9300 Bryn Mawr Ave., Rosemont, IL.

Taylor Street Archives increases local activities

The Taylor Street Archives (TSA), www.TaylorStreetArchives.com, is offering one $1,000 scholarship to a student in high school, college, or graduate school who has at least one family member registered with the archives. Applicants must submit a story or essay about the Taylor Street/Little Italy area. An application and additional information are available on the TSA website.


Chicago parking meter system improved

Chicago Parking Meters LLC (CPM) officials have met with dozens of chambers of commerce, businesses, and neighborhood organizations to discuss Chicago’s metered parking system. As a result, CPM has adopted several suggestions from this recent “listening tour” to improve the system and add convenience for motorists.

St. Barbara preschool renovated

St. Barbara’s Parish preschool underwent a $30,000 renovation recently. The project was partially funded by two of the school’s patrons, Tim and Sue Sullivan.

Military high school opens

Air Force Academy High School (AFAHS), the Chicago Public Schools’ sixth military academy, opened Sept. 8 at 1301 W. 14th St. With 127 freshman student-cadets enrolled now, it will add one new class per year until it counts a full roster of freshmen through seniors.
